Tunisia’s holiest city, with the Old Mosque just inside the wall. Flying over the desert on the outskirts of the city, you can hear strange sounds clearly – a dog ran in circles far below us, barking and barking. A cow lowed hoarsely. We heard a pick-up truck rattle along a dirt track. Eventually we sort of crashed into a thicket. It was a bit hairy, really. Visiting Kairouan later was a wonderful experience. The city was friendly and wore its great antiquity with a confident dignity. The people were genuinely welcoming and proud of their home. I liked it a lot and would love to return one day.
